NFWB leagues

The frequently asked questions/answers below are for our house league.  For information about our Travel Leagues (Cobra/Impact) please contact the coach for the team your child plays on.

Do you offer a summer league: NFWB does not have a summer league at this time.

Do you offer a winter league: NFWB does not have a winter league, but we do offer winter indoor training.  To find out more about our training, click on the TRAINING tab on the left menu on our home page.

What is the difference between house, tournament and travel: Our house league is our biggest league where games and practices are all held in Farmington and West Bloomfield. House league is generally open to anyone who wants to play baseball or softball and is age appropriate.  For those house players who want to extend their season by a few weeks we offer tournament ball.  Our Panther tournament teams are made up of house players who must try out and be selected to play tournament ball.  Tournament ball extends the baseball season by about a month and teams play in tournaments within driving distance from the area (although some tournaments may require overnight stay).  Tournament ball is a good way to play a little more competitive game and see if travel ball may be of interest. NFWB’s travel program is for those players and families that want to take baseball to another level.  Our Cobra program consists of teams from ages 9 through 18.  Players must try out for their age appropriate team in the fall for the following season.  Cobra teams generally practice all winter long and then play in the Kensington Valley league where they travel during the week to play interleague games and then typically play tournament ball on the weekends with tournaments being more competitive than our tournament teams and go on in both the spring and summer.

Do you offer financial assistance: Through the generosity of sponsors, the league is able to offer subsidies on a need basis.  Please email President@NFWB.com with your name, email address and phone number along with a brief description of the situation.  Your request will be confidentially discussed with the executive board and we will let you know a decision as quickly as possible.

Can I pay by check: We would prefer you pay via the nfwb.com website.  However,  If you would like to pay by check, you can make the check payable to NFWB and send it to P.O. box 250101, West Bloomfield, MI 48325.  Please add $10.00 to your total cost if you are paying by check.

Do you offer a multi child discount: A discount will automatically be given if you are registering more than one child.

Equipment

What equipment do I need: You will need to obtain, at a minimum, a baseball glove. Although the league does not provide a bat, your child will most likely be able to borrow one from a teammate if they don’t have their own. Cleats are optional, however if you do purchase them they must be plastic or rubber, NO METAL CLEATS ALLOWED, EXCEPT for ages 13-15 (Pony).  The league provides catchers equipment and batting helmets for all leagues, though in recent years, many players bring their own helmets and some bring their own catchers equipment.  We strongly recommended that you have your son wear a protective cup.

Does my child receive a uniform: A FULL uniform consisting of a hat, shirt, pants, and socks is provided.

What do I do if the uniform is the wrong size: Please be very careful when registering your child and selecting the shirt size as shirts are custom ordered for each child.  If the vendor does not provide the shirt size you ordered, please let your coach know as soon as possible as we will let the vendor know of the error and it will be corrected as soon as possible.  There will be an opportunity to exchange unworn pants for a different size for draft league players.  T-ball and coach pitch leagues will have different size pants on hand when we deliver shirts so that you may select the proper size.  Hats and socks are one size only.

Where should I go to purchase the necessary equipment: While there are many places you can go to purchase cleats, gloves, helmets and bats we would recommend that you go to Dick’s Sporting goods as they have been a longtime supporter and sponsor of the NFWB league.

Teams

Can my child play on a team with his friends: Requests to be placed on a team with a friend or on a certain coach’s team is available for our age 5-6 (T-ball) and age 7-8 (Pinto) leagues. While we can’t guarantee a request will be honored, we will do our best to place your child where they request. Once your child has reached our Mustang League (age 9-10) teams are chosen via a DRAFT and NO requests can be made or honored.

What league is my child eligible to play in: See matrix below. Ages are as of April 30, 2017.

What day of the week will my child play on: See matrix below.  Saturday times will vary between morning and afternoon.  Additionally, each league other than Shetland and Pony may play a Saturday evening once or twice so that the kids will be able to play at Drake Park under the lights. We have loosened our age requirements to allow the ability for younger kids in a grade to play with their friends. 6, 8, 10 and 12 year olds now have the option to play in their age appropriate league or play up with their friends without having to tryout. See also I want my child to play up below.

I want my child to play up: As stated above, NFWB has loosened our age requirements to allow the ability for younger kids in a grade to play with their friends in the year they would have been behind. 6, 8, 10 and 12 year olds now have the option to play in their age appropriate league or play up with their friends without having to tryout. If your child’s age does not fall into the league they are interested in playing in, they will need to follow our written policy of what your child must do to be considered to play up.  On the left side of the website under menu, please select 2016 House Rules, choose baseball or softball and then open up the document NFWB Play-up Policy.

What team is my child on: When teams are finalized, which will be shortly before practices begin, you will be contacted by your child’s coach.  Your coach will introduce themselves and provide you with key information such as practice days/times, field location, etc.

I need to switch my child’s team: Each year the league will get one or two requests from a parent explaining why their situation is different and why a switch must be made.  In our older leagues where teams are drafted, there will not be any trading of players.  When we receive a request in T-Ball and coach pitch we typically explain that your child will meet new friends and have a good season.  We generally hear at the end of the season that families were glad they stayed on the team they were assigned to and both the child and the parents made new friends and had a good experience.  Additionally, we do our best to try and accommodate all requests made at the time of registration.

VOLUNTEER

Do you do background checks for coaches: The league does perform background checks on all coaches.

How can I sponsor:  The league depends on sponsorships to help keep our enrollment fees low.  A sponsorship form with information can be found on our left side menu under “Sponsorship”.

Can I volunteer: YES!!!!!  We would love to have you volunteer for any of the many committees we have and encourage you to do so.  Please email either baseball@nfwb.com or softball@nfwb.com and let them know you are interested in volunteering.

Communication

How are rainouts communicated: If games are cancelled due to inclement weather we will send out an email to all affected players and parents.  Additionally, we will send out a text message informing you of a cancellation. You can call the rainout hotline (248) 788-6395 which is updated 60 minutes prior to game time. Please do not call the league office.

Do you have a phone app: Yes - search for Game day powered by League Toolbox

Will I get something in the mail to register: You will not receive anything in the mail.  Once you are in our database, you will receive an invitation to register and all correspondence will be via e-mail.

Do you have walk in registration: We no longer offer walk in registration.

MISC

What are the rules: Rules can be found on the left hand side menu bar under 2016 House Rules

Are there team/individual pictures: Yes, the league offers the opportunity to purchase pictures.  More information will be communicated to you during the season.
